Hair Loss in Women: Hidden Causes Most Doctors Miss
If you’ve noticed more shedding in the shower, a widening part, or a thinner ponytail — you’re not alone. Hair loss in women is common, but rarely talked about. And while it can feel cosmetic, it’s often a sign of something deeper happening in the body.
In practice, I often see hair loss linked to three major (and often overlooked) root causes:
1. Hormonal Imbalances
Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol all impact your hair cycle. If you’re dealing with PCOS, postpartum changes, perimenopause, or coming off birth control — your hormones could be driving the loss.
Androgens like DHT can shrink hair follicles, causing the hair to grow back thinner (or not at all). If your part is widening or you’re seeing diffuse thinning on the top of your head, we may be looking at androgenic alopecia — especially if acne, irregular cycles, or unwanted facial hair are also present.
2. Physical and/or Emotional Stress
Sudden or delayed hair loss that shows up 3–6 months after a stressful event is often a condition called telogen effluvium. It’s your body’s way of saying, “Something had to give.”
Common triggers include:
- Birth or miscarriage
- Illness or surgery
- Burnout or chronic stress
- Crash dieting or nutrient depletion
This type of loss is usually reversible — but only when we identify and support the underlying stressor.
3. Nutrient Deficiencies
Low levels of iron, zinc, protein, vitamin D, biotin, or antioxidants can all impair hair growth. Ferritin (your stored iron) is especially key — many women need levels of 70–100 ng/mL to support hair regrowth.
Even if your blood work looks “normal,” symptoms may point to deeper imbalances. That’s where a functional, whole-body lens really makes the difference.
A Naturopathic Approach to Hair Loss
Hair loss isn’t just about what’s happening on the surface. It’s often your body’s way of waving a red flag. We’ll dig into the hormonal, metabolic, nutrient, and emotional layers together to create a personalized plan for real results.
Bonus: DIY Hair Growth Oil
Try this scalp massage blend 2–3x/week to support circulation and nourish follicles naturally:
Mix:
• 3 drops rosemary oil
• 3 drops peppermint oil
• 3 drops lavender oil
• 1 tbsp jojoba oil (as base)
Massage into the scalp for 10 minutes and leave on for at least 30 minutes before washing.
Note: Always dilute essential oils before applying.
