“I Just Don’t Feel Like Myself"
If you’ve ever said, “I just don’t feel like myself,” you’re not alone.
It’s the most common phrase I hear in practice — and when I do, I always pay close attention.
Because behind those words is often something deeper. A quiet sense that your energy, emotions, or body have shifted — even if you can’t quite explain why.
You might not be in full burnout. Your labs may even say everything looks “normal.”
But internally, something feels different. And for many women, that something is hormonal.
What “Not Feeling Like Yourself” May Look Like
It’s rarely one symptom — and most women can’t point to a clear cause. Instead, it creeps in gradually as a collection of subtle shifts:
- You wake up tired even after a full night’s sleep
- You’re more irritable, withdrawn, or emotionally reactive
- You’re experiencing brain fog, with noticeable difficulty concentrating, processing, or recalling information
- Your period feels different — heavier, earlier, later, or suddenly irregular
- You’ve lost interest in things that once brought you joy
- You’re doing everything “right” but not seeing results in your body
- You feel more sensitive to stress or overwhelmed by things that never used to bother you
- Your libido has dropped — and you don’t feel as connected to your body
- You’re more frequently bloated, even without significant dietary changes
- You’ve noticed more hair shedding or thinning over time
It’s often not dramatic enough to raise alarm bells — but enough to leave you feeling like a stranger in your own skin.
Why Investigating Hormones Requires More Than Just Numbers
Hormones like progesterone, estrogen, cortisol, and thyroid hormones are highly dynamic — they shift throughout your cycle, your life stages, and in response to stress. That’s why it’s not just about running a test and seeing if your numbers fall within a reference range.
To truly understand what’s happening, hormones need to be tested at the right time, interpreted in the context of your symptoms, and assessed alongside other key systems that influence hormone balance — such as nutrient status, metabolic health, thyroid function, gut health, and nervous system regulation. Without looking at the full picture, subtle imbalances often go unnoticed — even while your body is clearly signalling that something isn’t right.
What Could Be Causing the Shift?
Here are some of the most common patterns I see in women who say, “I just don’t feel like myself anymore”:
1. Low Progesterone:
Low progesterone is often tied to chronic stress, anovulatory cycles, luteal phase defects, or perimenopause/post-menopause. This may show up as anxiety, disrupted sleep, heavier periods, mood swings, difficulty conceiving, or spotting before your period.
2. Estrogen Imbalance:
Estrogen may be elevated, poorly metabolized, or out of sync with progesterone. This can show up as bloating, PMS, breast tenderness, mood swings, and heavier or more symptomatic periods.
3. Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction:
Even when TSH is conventionally “normal,” symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and weight fluctuations may reflect sluggish thyroid function or poor T4-to-T3 conversion.
4. Cortisol Dysregulation:
A disrupted stress response may leave you wired at night, tired in the morning, emotionally reactive, or unable to keep up with your usual routine.
5. Post-Birth Control Hormone Shifts:
Coming off hormonal contraception can trigger temporary hormone imbalances — irregular periods, breakouts, mood swings, or low libido.
6. Perimenopause:
Hormonal shifts often begin years before menopause as both estrogen and progesterone start to fluctuate unpredictably. This can lead to sleep disturbances, night sweats, hot flashes, increased anxiety or irritability, brain fog, heavier or irregular cycles, mood swings, vaginal dryness, low libido, and heightened sensitivity to stress.
You Know Your Body Best
If something feels off — that’s reason enough to explore it.
You don’t have to wait until symptoms worsen or become debilitating to take action. Often, the earlier we listen to those subtle shifts, the easier it is to address the root causes and restore balance.
In my practice, I help women investigate and address the underlying causes contributing to their symptoms with:
✔ In-depth case analysis
✔ Comprehensive lab testing
✔ Personalized nutrition and lifestyle interventions
✔ Targeted supplementation to correct and optimize underlying imbalances
✔ Bioidentical hormone therapy when indicated
Many of the underlying causes behind why you may not feel like yourself can be easily overlooked with standard testing — which is why a more individualized, comprehensive approach often makes all the difference.
Final Thought
Not feeling like yourself isn’t “just stress.” It’s often your body’s way of asking for deeper care. If this feels familiar, know that you’re not alone — and there is a path forward.
Let’s work together to better understand what’s happening beneath the surface — so you can feel like you again.
